Digestion is weak during this time. Diseases caused by Pitta like hyperacidity, indigestion, skin disorders (boils, eczema, and rashes), hair loss, and infections are common in this season. To stay away from illnesses, one must follow these Ayurvedic health tips during monsoon.

It is the time when the humidity levels in the atmosphere are high, which also leads to reduced vital body fluids. Due to lack of oxygen in the air, often people complain of breathlessness and weakness.

  • The digestive system gets weakened due to dehydration in summer. This leads to low digestive power. This is further weakened by vitiation of doshas and dhatus due to monsoon. Hence following a diet that increase power of digestion and strengthens the digestive system would be beneficial in the rainy season.
  • Drink boiled and cooled water mixed with little honey. Drink plenty of water and keep your body well hydrated.
  • Avoid heavy, hot, acidic, sour (pickles, chutneys, chilies, yogurt, curry, etc.) and salty food as it promotes water retention, indigestion, hyperacidity and bloating. Avoid deep fried foods, junk food and meat. Avoid salads and leafy vegetables.
  • Eat light and easily digestible foods, vegetable soups, cooked or steamed vegetables, zucchini, squash, pumpkin, steamed salad, fruits, moong dal, khichree, corn, chickpea flour, and oatmeal etc. Stick to foods prepared out of old barley, rice and wheat.
  • Adding ginger and green gram in daily diet.
  • Use ghee, olive oil, corn oil and sunflower oil for cooking as they are lighter. Avoid heavy oils like mustard oil, butter, peanut oil, and other heavy and heating oils.
  • Do not indulge in heavy exercises like running, cycling etc. which increase Pitta (heat). Yoga, walking, swimming, and stretching are good.
  • Be careful while eating out and make sure you go to a place which is clean and hygienic. Completely avoid eating food which is exposed to atmosphere, like the ones sold by roadside vendors.
  • Bitter taste neutralizes Pitta, so eat a lot of bitter vegetables like bitter gourd (karela), and bitter herbs like neem, fenugreek, and turmeric as it prevents infection.
  • Massage with sesame oil at least twice a week also keeps you healthy during the rainy season. For some people sesame oil can be a little heating, so they can use coconut oil.
  • Eat warm food. Wash vegetables with clean water and steam them well to kill germs. Avoid eating uncooked foods and salads.
  • Always keep the surrounding dry and clean. Do not allow water to get accumulated around.
  • Keep your body warm as viruses attack immediately when body temperature goes down. Do not enter an air-conditioned room with wet hair and damp cloths, and always dry your feet and webs with soft dry cloth whenever they are wet.
  • Do not allow kids to play in stagnant polluted water filled puddles.
  • Massage your whole body with sesame oil at least twice a week also keeps you healthy during the rainy season. For some people sesame oil can be a little heating, so they can use coconut oil.
