Ayurveda – An Answer To Every Chronic Pain

What is arthritis or chronic joint pain?

Arthritis is a condition that affects the joints and surrounding tissues. It can be your knees, shoulders, spine, wrist or even fingers. It includes pain and stiffness in muscles that may worsen at a growing age. Two common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. These conditions affect the joints, wherein an inflammation can occur resulting in immobility and severe pain.

Ayurvedic Treatment For Chronic Knee Pain

Chronic knee pain or osteoarthritis is a condition that is not just faced by the elderly but also by today’s generation. It is developing into a serious problem due to our lifestyle, food, and a lack of exercise. It is the most common form of arthritis, affecting about 237 million (3.3% of the total population of our country), amongst these about 10% of males and 18% of females affected are over 60 years old.

In reality, arthritis isn’t one but almost 200 different rheumatoid diseases that affect the joints. The biggest downside of having arthritis is that it can severely impede a person’s ability to perform routine tasks. The few most common forms of arthritis include inflammatory arthritis, degenerative or mechanical arthritis, metabolic arthritis, infectious arthritis, connective tissue disease, septic arthritis, childhood arthritis, gout, and fibromyalgia. Therefore, it is important to chart out a proper plan for treating this condition.

How Ayurveda is the answer?

Ayurveda is an ancient form of medication, which uses nutrients, exercise & meditation altogether to encourage good health. Combining certain nutrients and other supplements with modern medicine may be beneficial in treating arthritis.

Ayurvedic Treatment For Chronic Joint Pain

According to Ayurveda, excess air and hyperactive immune system cause inflammation and pain. But when you balance excess air and immune system, inflammation and pain normally mitigate. Hence, it is necessary to balance the doshas in order to get complete relief from this condition. Doshas are predominantly made of 5 elements – Earth, Water, Air, Space & Fire. These doshas are essential vital energies behind every bodily function and structure.

If you are suffering from chronic pain, stop consuming dairy products, meat, wheat, fermented food etc. Calcium supplements or bone nourishing foods are the ideal options for treating this condition. Take any of the two from the below list daily, which provides 600 to 800 mg calcium naturally:

Health Benefits of Abhyanga Snan in Diwali | A Holy Bath for a Healthy Start

It might be irritating to wake up early in the Diwali vacations just to take a bath. But this bath has a special significance in Diwali as it is considered as a holy bath during Diwali. According to early ancient mythology, Narak Chaturdashi implies the victory of good over evil. And thus, this early morning bath signifies the elimination of evil within us. It is also believed that since Abhyanga Snan is taken before the sunrise, it is as pure as bathing in the River Ganga.

Importance of Abhyanga Snan in Diwali

Here’s how to perform the ritual:

  • Wake up early in the morning (before sunrise).
  • Massage your entire body with sesame or any ayurvedic oil.
  • Also, apply a few drops of oil on the scalp and massage your head.
  • Keep massaging and wait for around 30 minutes before you go for a bath so that the oil is absorbed by the body.
  • Before bathing, apply Ubtan (a powdered mix of Ayurvedic herbs and natural ingredients) and massage it thoroughly over the entire body.
  • Scrub it and rinse with water properly so that the mixture is washed off.
  • Now, bathe as you usually do.

As it includes a full body massage with ayurvedic oil and in some regions, a special ayurvedic herbal soap is used for bathing. However, many people use sesame oil, sandalwood oil, coconut oil and then scrubbing the body with Ubtan. Ubtan consists of besan, turmeric oil, and sandalwood powder. As Abhyanga Snan is an ancient ayurvedic therapy that is said to be the most beneficial for health, it leads to an increase in Sattva Guna and decreases Rajas and Tamas. During the days of Diwali, an Abhyanga Snan reaps 6% more benefits than the other days.

Winter is the season where the body runs out of moisture. Abhyanga Snan moisturizes the body and helps in the flow of blood circulation with tightening the muscles, lubricating the joints, eliminating the toxins from the body & boosting up the stamina. The Ubtan helps in healing the damaged or dull skin, shedding the dead skin; ultimately resulting in soft, smooth & glowing skin. The head massage with warm oil relieves you from stress & calms your mind. It also stimulates the hair follicles which results in hair growth. It also stimulates the nerves, prevents neurological problems and relaxes the mind and soul.

With this holy & simple ritual, heal your complete body so that you can stay healthy for the entire year. Prepare yourself to welcome this festive season with Ayushakti’s proven ayurvedic therapies. Thyroid Nodules & Its Ayurvedic Treatment | Ayushakti Ayurveda

A lump in the thyroid, the butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck. Thyroid nodules are solid or fluid-filled lumps that form within your thyroid, a small gland located at the base of your neck, just above your breastbone.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Thyroid Nodules

Symptoms :

The most common of these symptoms is a lump in the neck followed by a sense of mass while swallowing. Very rarely, nodules may cause pain or discomfort. Occasionally, however, some nodules become so large that they can-

  • Be felt
  • Be seen, often as a swelling at the base of your neck
  • Press on your windpipe or esophagus, causing shortness of breath or difficulty swallowing

In some cases, thyroid nodules produce additional thyroxine, a hormone secreted by your thyroid gland. The extra thyroxine can cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism such as-

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Increased perspiration
  • Tremor
  • Nervousness
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat

Ayushakti’s approach is to improve the metabolism and balance the immune system which creates thyroid hormone balance naturally and reduces anti thyroid antibody. The diet, lifestyle, herbs and detox therapies help relieve all the hypothyroid symptoms like panic, exhaustion, bloating of the body, indigestion, nervousness and anxiety, dryness of skin and hair etc.

Ayushakti’s Detox Treatment is a combination of therapies that helps to improve the metabolism faster, balancing hormones, reduces inflammation and improve overall energy levels. Ayurvedic Treatment For Hyperthyroidism | Ayushakti Ayurveda

Hyperthyroidism is a metabolic disorder, characterized by the excessive production of thyroxin by the thyroid gland. The increased metabolism causes loss of weight and symptoms such as trembling and sweating of hands.

Hyperthyroidism | Ayurvedic Treatment For Thyroid

SOME COMMON CAUSES SYMPTOMS OF HYPERTHYROIDISM

  • Graves’ Disease

Graves Disease | Ayurvedic Medicine For Thyroid

The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves’ disease. The thyroid gland itself over-produces thyroid hormone and is no longer able to respond to the pituitary and hypothalamus. Graves’ disease is five times more common in women and runs in families. Risk factors for Graves’ disease include smoking, viral illnesses, radiation to the neck, and medications. The condition is associated with an eye disease called Graves’ ophthalmopathy and skin lesions called dermopathy. Diagnosis of Graves’ disease is made by blood tests, and a nuclear medicine thyroid scan.

  • Functioning adenoma (“hot nodule”) and Toxic Multinodular Goiter (TMNG)

Functioning Adenoma & Toxic Multinodular Goiter

When the thyroid gland tissue overgrows, either in individual nodules (the functioning adenoma) or in multiple clusters (multinodular goiter), it is generally termed “goiter.” Goiters appear as large, swollen areas in the front of the neck near the Adam’s apple. These goiters may over-produce thyroid hormone, causing symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

  • Excessive intake of thyroid hormones

Excessive intake of thyroid medicines | Causes of Thyroid

Hyperthyroidism may be caused by the intake of too much thyroid medication. Supplemental thyroid medication is given to patients who have low thyroid hormone, or hypothyroidism. If the dose is not correct or the patient takes too much of the medication, hypothyroidism may occur. Some people may abuse thyroid hormone medications in an attempt to lose weight. Taking thyroid hormones, the body does not need may result in hyperthyroidism.

  • Abnormal secretion of TSH

Abnormal secretion of TSH | Ayurvedic Treatment For Thyroid

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is secreted by the pituitary gland and causes the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone. A tumor or problem with the pituitary gland can cause and excess of TSH to affect the thyroid and can result in hyperthyroidism.

  • Thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland)

Inflammation of the thyroid gland | Symptoms of Thyroid

Thyroiditis is inflammation of the thyroid. It is usually caused by a viral illness. The patient may have generalized neck pain, sore throat, fever, chills, and a tender thyroid. The inflammation of the thyroid causes an increased amount of thyroid hormone to be secreted into the body, causing hyperthyroidism. After pregnancy, some women – up to 8% – may develop a condition called lymphocytic thyroiditis where white blood cells called lymphocytes accumulate in the glandular tissue. Thyroiditis can be diagnosed with blood tests and a thyroid scan.

  • Excessive iodine intake

Excessive iodine intake | Causes of Thyroid

An important component of thyroid hormone is iodine. If an excess of iodine is ingested the thyroid may over-produce thyroid hormone and cause hyperthyroidism. Some medications such as such as the anti-arrhythmic drug amiodarone (Cordarone) contain large amounts of iodine and can induce thyroid dysfunction.

Ayushakti’s ayurvedic treatment for hyperthyroidism aims to control its symptoms and prevent them from getting severe. Ayurveda strives to cure the root cause or pathology of hyperthyroidism i.e. Grave’s disease. Stress, smoking, exposure of neck to radiation, certain medications and persistent viral infections can precipitate Grave’s disease.

Some common symptoms of hyperthyroidism is a rapid heartbeat (tachycardia). The feeling of a racing heart and/or palpitations can be distressing to patients.

SYMPTOMS OF HYPERTHYROIDISM

  • Excessive hunger
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Nervousness
  • Intolerance towards heat
  • Difficulty to concentrate
  • Scanty or irregular menstruation
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Sleeplessness
  • Excessive sweating
  • Tremors in extremities

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR HYPERTHYROIDISM

According to Ayurveda, impaired digestion of food leads to blockage of the minute channels in the body causing an imbalance in the function of the thyroid gland. Hyperthyroidism reflects profound derangement of Vata and Pitta Doshas. The two vitiated Doshas overstimulate the gastric fire which leads to excessive hunger. Vayu has dynamic, light and unstable properties. Escalation of dynamic and unstable characteristics causes tremors in the extremities, sleeplessness, nervousness and difficulty to concentrate the mind. It is also marked by frequent bowel movement and irregular menstruation. The increased lightness of Vayu makes the body lighter (because of weight loss). Since Pitta is basically hot, the patient has excessive sweating and intolerance towards heat.

DIET & LIFESTYLE ADVICE TO FOLLOW

  • Include enough quantity of milk, pure ghee and milk products in food.
  • Eat fresh fruits like banana and melons, and dry fruits like dates and walnuts, which reduce aggravated Vata and Pitta.
  • Yoga, Pranayama and meditation also help in reigning over aggravated Vata and Pitta.

To balance thyroid function naturally, Ayushakti recommends Detox Panchakarma Treatment with customized, balanced diet. Meher Castelino, a pioneer in fashion journalism, and author of two books on the same, tried out this diet. The diet was basically an intense Ayurvedic detox programme that helped Ms. Castelino get rid of excess fat, lose 5 kgs in three weeks, improve her metabolism, and find renewed vigor and energy.

Don’t confuse this detox programme with the typical western detox methods that simply involve drinking juices. The diet described in the article is based on the 5000-years old principles of Ayurveda.

Five days, every month, follow a detox soup (mung and vegetable) diet. Whenever you are hungry, just have this soup. This soup helps remove the toxins and bloating from various crooks and crannies of your body.

Detox soup is very easy to make and is quite palatable

Ingredients :

1 cup soaked green Mung & 2 cups of vegetables. (you can use vegetables like pumpkin, bottle gourd, carrot, onion, French beans, snake gourd, turai, galka,( soft gourd), tendli etc. Cook the mung along with the vegetables in a pressure cooker. Add garlic ginger paste and seasoning to taste. Garnish with coriander leaves and drink warm.

Mung relieves inflammation and bloating, while flushing out toxins from the body. It is low in calories and leaves you feeling lighter and more energetic.

On the sixth day, you can return to a normal diet but restrict foods like wheat, fermented, sour, deep fried foods, red meat like pork and beef and food that tends to create gas in the body. Citrus foods like lemon and tomato should be avoided. Try and avoid carbohydrates including rice, bread, pasta, chappatti, potato, fruits for a few days.

Your diet should now consist of more green and leafy vegetables like pumpkin, bottle gourd, carrot, French beans, turai, galka(soft gourd), tendli, spring onion and tofu. Mung and mung dal, tuvar daal (lentil) are very good. Avoid carbs as much as possible. Non vegetarians can have eggs, fish and chicken for their protein requirement.

You can also make mung dal or besan(chickpea flour) pancakes or chilla in place of rotti/chappatti.

Spice up your foods with ginger, garlic, cumin, asafoetida, corriander which reduces gas formation in the body.

The weight loss of three to five kgs leaves you feeling lighter and more energetic. If you wish to maintain this feeling of lightness and energy, avoid wheat, sour, fermented foods and red meat from your diet.

The opposite of a light, energetic, and healthy feeling is exactly what Ms. Castelino was feeling. Work, travelling, and outside food had resulted in high sugar levels which weren’t advisable for her body.

With the help of this diet formed by Ayushakti doctors, a healthy state of being was once again a part of Ms.Castelino’s life.

Ayushakti has successfully helped lacs of people worldwide to relieve chronic ailments like Joint pain, blood sugar, obesity, cholesterol, skin problems, infertility, chronic fatigue, Gas & acidity, IBS, cough, cold and allergies and many other chronic ailments.
