Cold and Cough: An Ayurvedic Guideline

In the season of heavy rains and frequent downpour, people come across a variety of troubles. The most common amongst these troubles is the common cold and cough that affects a significant number of the population.

Following are some guidelines on how to manage cold and cough with the help of Ayurveda:

General Symptoms of Cough and Cold

  • Runny Nose
  • Coughing
  • Fever/Chills
  • Continuous sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain/fatigue
  • Body Pain
  • Breathing difficulty

One or many of the above symptoms are experienced by an individual suffering from a cold.

Causes of Cough and Cold

  • A continuous change of surroundings/constant exposure to cold and chilly winds can be contributors
  • A primary cause is the digestive fire (agni) being affected with cold or moist conditions
  • A reduced agni can affect the body’s overall immunity
  • Lowered immunity leads to an increase in the toxin production
  • These amas can go and clog the micro-channels in the body leading to formation of phlegm or mucus
  • It is this phlegm/mucus blocks the respiratory channel functions. Finally you experience soar throat, allergic cough, sneezing, blocked nose, breathing difficulty etc.

Along with the above mentioned causes, there can be other factors as well that lead to cold and cough in individuals. For example, an allergy to one’s surroundings can also be the cause of a cold. Eating or drinking food that is too cold or hot can also cause cold and cough in the individual. Habits and lifestyle choices such as sleeping in the afternoon after a heavy meal or staying up late at night, can also contribute to developing a cold. There goes a quote which says that “Your biography is your biology” and the Ayurvedic philosophy stands by it. In the end, what we eat and do throughout the day has a large impact on our health.

Preventing Monsoon Diseases

Monsoons are what everyone waits for, at the end of the summer season. The first few showers seem like a blessing in disguise as at this point. People have had enough of the scorching heat and debilitating humidity. Forget people, even animals seem to stare at the skies, waiting for the clouds to gather and pour torrents and gushes of water droplets from above. However, all things in the universe come with their advantages and disadvantages. The monsoon, along with the refreshing showers and cool climate, brings with it all sorts of diseases that spread pretty quickly because of all the moisture in the air.

Natural Remedies for Cough

One of the most irritating things for a person, can be a persistent cough. Imagine someone giving a seminar or a presentation  to a group/large audience. A presentation or seminar should be a continuous flow of information dissemination that captivates the audience and engages their brain on an intellectual and emotional level. If this flow is interrupted by periodic coughing in the person presenting, it will lead to a disconnection between the audience and the presentation. This doesn’t happen purposely or with intention. It’s just that the brain naturally tends to notice disturbances in things and eventually puts more emphasis on it. We are therefore unable to focus on the main objective at hand. Natural remedies for coughs in babies, kids, and adults help us take care of this irritation.

Allergy is A PART of our immune system. Yes, you heard it right. Allergy is process by which our body sends an abnormal reaction to an external agent in the systems. The agent mentioned here refers to a particle that gets into the human body through the air/skin/water/food or any other pathway. These particles are called as Allergens. Allergens are classified under the large category of antigens. Antigens are can be defined as any particle, which upon getting into the body, sets an immune trigger from the immune system. A point to be noted is that an antigen/allergen is not necessarily a negative or a destructive substance. Most of the times, specifically in the case of an allergy, antigens are just normal food particles or matter, which our body, unfortunately, has an issue with.
