Top 5 causes of infertility in women

Infertility can play havoc in a person, or a couple’s lives. People in love, build hopes and dreams. Most of the times, these hopes and dreams involve bearing a child. When infertility is diagnosed, it tends to make things grim for the people that were waiting to achieve these dreams. Statistics show that 1 in 6 couples can become infertile. These statistics are alarming and needs to be addressed on a priority basis. Infertility wasn’t something that was so prevalent in the earlier days. Also, it used to take place at a much later age, thereby keeping hopes and dreams unaffected.

There can be a number of causes of infertility in women. Following are the causes and the details of how they affect women and their chances of fertility.

Endometriosis

In this condition, the uterus lining inside the uterus grows outside the uterus. Usually, the uterus lining keeps shedding. If the lining grows out of the uterus, it can block the tubes and affect ovulation in different ways. A woman with endometriosis will experience painful periods, more pain during penetration while copulation, chronic pain in the pelvis, painful bowel movements, urination during menstruation, difficulty in becoming pregnant. Conventional solutions involve laparoscopic surgery to remove abnormal tissues or sometimes help to adjust blocked tubes. To conceive, fertility drugs are taken in conjunction with insemination or sometimes, even In-vitro fertilization is considered as an option. Treatments are a success in mild cases and less successful in extreme cases. Insemination gives better results as compared to In vitro fertilization.

Problems in Ovulation

A problem in ovulation can also be one of the causes of infertility in women. Sometimes, hormonal problems can prevent a mature egg from releasing naturally from the ovary. A woman experiencing this will experience periods that are irregular or absent and will extremely heavy bleeding or sometimes, very light bleeding. Conventional medicine for this includes drugs that stimulate the ovaries and fertility drugs that are combined with IVF treatments. Although these drugs do solve the issues of ovulation in most of the cases, success rates of conception are still pretty low.

Low-Quality Eggs

Sometimes, eggs can become damaged or can even develop abnormalities on a chromosomal level. For these eggs, it becomes difficult to sustain a pregnancy. This problem is based on the age of the individual. There are no specific symptoms of this. The consequence is, of course, the inability to conceive a child. No treatments exist except using eggs that have been donated by someone. Two-thirds of women who opt for donor eggs aren’t able to conceive a child.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a common cause of infertility in women. In Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, ovulation is affected by an imbalance of hormones. The main job of ovaries is to develop and mature and ripen. Instead, in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, cysts start to form in the ovaries. This leads to menstruation cycles that aren’t regular in their occurrence. It also leads to increased growth of hair, acne and an increase in body weight. Tackling the weight issue is done by adopting the lifestyle and diet changes. Ovulation-stimulating drugs are also used, along with artificial hormones and in vitro-fertilization. Losing weight can have a significant effect on the chances of copulation.

Tube Blockages

Tubes are the main transport system for the eggs and the sperms. If they get blocked, the eggs and the sperm won’t be able to meet and therefore, will almost never lead to conception. Tube blockages can be a result of inflammatory disease in the pelvis, diseases that have been transmitted sexually or any previous surgical interventions in the area. Treatment options are laparoscopic surgery or In-vitro fertilization. Rates of success in conception aren’t fixed and depend on person-to-person.
