The Thyroid glands, which produces hormones that regulate how every cell uses energy, otherwise known as our metabolism. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too many hormones.
The Thyroid gland located just in front of your throat in tiny butterfly-shaped. The hormones created by the thyroid gland have an effect on almost every organ and tissue within the body. Thyroid disorders are much more prevalent for women, particularly when they are childbearing age. It could be due to the link with thyroid functions as well as estrogen the principal sex hormone of women.
According to Ayurveda, Improper diet and stressful lifestyle disturbs digestion which leads to Aam formation and imbalance of Vata.
Aam & vitiated Vata circulate in the whole body along with undigested Ras dhatu. This coarse undigested Aam blocks Rasavaha (particularly Thyroid gland) & other succeeding channels which lead to high deep tissue metabolism. Because of unstable property of Vata, excessive production of hormone may happen. As a result level of thyroxin is increased in blood steam causing hyperthyroidism.
What is Hyperthyroidism?
Hyperthyroidism is when your thyroid makes too much of a hormone called thyroxin. Your thyroid controls things how fast your heart beats and how quickly you burn calories. It releases hormones to control your metabolism (all the things your body does to turn food into energy and keep you going).
Hyperthyroidism, also known as overactive thyroid, can speed up your metabolism and cause unpleasant symptoms. Symptoms typically include Rapid heartbeat, weight loss, nervousness, breathlessness, increased appetite, insomnia, irritability, absent menstruation and moist skin, and damp or increased perspiration.
(Note: Overactive thyroid conditions and adrenal overactivity can often be present simultaneously, which could lead to additional or interrelated symptoms.
It is possible for the thyroid to become enlarged depending on the type and degree of thyroiditis. Hypothyroidism, which is an underactive thyroid condition, is much more common than overactive thyroid conditions. However, hyperthyroidism rates have been steadily increasing due to increased gut permeability and long-term use of certain medications.

- Certain medication (common)
- Following pregnancy (common)

What are the Types of Hyperthyroidism?
The most common forms of hyperthyroidism include-
- Diffuse toxic goiter (graves’ disease): Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies produced by your immune system stimulate your thyroid to produce too much T4. It's the most common cause of hyperthyroidism.
- Toxic multi nodular goiter (Plummer disease): This form of hyperthyroidism occurs when one or more adenomas of your thyroid produce too much T4. An adenoma is a part of the gland that has walled itself off from the rest of the gland, forming noncancerous (benign) lumps that may cause an enlargement of the thyroid.
- Thyroiditis- Sometimes your thyroid gland can become inflamed after pregnancy, due to an autoimmune condition or for unknown reasons. The inflammation can cause excess thyroid hormone stored in the gland to leak into your bloodstream. Some types of thyroiditis may cause pain, while others are painless.
Which are the other conditions affecting Thyroid Health?
The immune cells malfunction and attack healthy thyroid tissue, resulting in inflammation which causes the thyroid gland to swell and develop what is known as a goiter. If left untreated, it will continue to enlarge to the point where it interferes with swallowing and breathing.
Thyroid issues can increase the chance of developing complications caused by menopausal change. For instance, during menopausal time females are at a higher risk to be diagnosed with osteoporosis (a condition in which the bone density decreases). A thyroid that is overactive can increase the risk of developing the condition.
In the same way, as menopausal symptoms progress the risk of developing heart disease rises; thyroid problems are also a risk factor. As a result, thyroid issues can increase the risk of developing complications during menopausal.
Thyroid issues are among the most common complications encountered by pregnant women. A thyroid issue like this could affect the health and wellbeing of the foetus and also lead to miscarriages and infertility. Keep an eye on the thyroid gland by conducting a proper test and assisting by a healthy diet.
