Amenorrhea is the medical phrase for a female of reproductive age who doesn’t have menstrual periods. In simple terms, it is the absence of a menstrual period. This absence of a monthly period is very much normal after menopause and before puberty. It is also considered normal during pregnancy and lactation. Other causes of missing periods can be excessive weight loss caused by severe illness, eating ailments, disproportionate exercising, or anxiety.

 

The absence of a period in a young woman who hasn’t started menstruating by age 16 is termed primary amenorrhea. Secondary amenorrhea is the state of missing menses emerging after the menstrual cycles have become established. In Ayurveda Amenorrhea is known as Anartava. It is a state mentioned in female-related diseases (Stree Roga Chikitsa). Anartava is one of the signs of Vata imbalance.

• Eat more cooked vegetables as they increase moisture and reduce swelling and fat.
• Daily take any one of the calcium boosting foods such as 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds or 10 soaked almonds, one cup spinach puree, 100 gm amaranth cooked in any form.
