Common Mistakes People Make During a Stomach Infection

Common Mistakes People Make During a Stomach Infection

Stomach infections are extremely common, especially during seasonal changes, after eating outside food, or due to contaminated water. These infections can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites — and symptoms usually include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, weakness, fever, and dehydration.

While most stomach infections can recover within a few days, many people unknowingly make mistakes that worsen the condition, prolong recovery, and sometimes lead to complications. These mistakes often come from myths, home remedies that don’t work, or lack of correct information.

In this blog, we discuss the most common mistakes people make during a stomach infection and how to avoid them for faster, safer recovery.

1. Drinking Less Water or Avoiding Fluids

One of the biggest dangers during a stomach infection is dehydration. Vomiting and diarrhea cause the body to lose:

  • Water
  • Electrolytes
  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Minerals

Many people avoid drinking water out of fear that it may worsen vomiting. But not drinking enough fluids can make the infection much more serious.

What to do instead:

  • Sip ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution)
  • Drink coconut water
  • Take clear soups
  • Drink lemon water
  • Avoid gulping — take small sips frequently

Hydration is the number one priority.

2. Eating Spicy, Oily, or Heavy Food Too Early

Eating heavy or spicy foods too early irritates the stomach lining, increases acid, and triggers more vomiting or diarrhea.

What to do instead:

Stick to a light, easily digestible diet, such as:

  • Khichdi
  • Moong dal soup
  • Boiled rice
  • Toast
  • Bananas
  • Applesauce
  • Curd (only if diarrhea is mild)

Eat small meals every 2–3 hours rather than large meals.

3. Taking Antibiotics Without a Doctor’s Advice

Most stomach infections are viral, not bacterial. Antibiotics do not help viral infections — and unnecessary antibiotic use can:

  • Damage gut bacteria
  • Increase diarrhea
  • Cause stomach irritation
  • Lead to antibiotic resistance

What to do instead:

Take antibiotics only if a doctor confirms a bacterial infection, like severe food poisoning or typhoid.

4. Drinking Milk or Heavy Dairy Products

Milk is difficult to digest during a stomach infection. It may worsen:

  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Cramps

Many people think milk is soothing, but it actually irritates an already inflamed stomach.

What to do instead:

  • Avoid milk for 48–72 hours
  • If needed, take curd or buttermilk in small quantities
  • Avoid cheese, paneer, ice cream

5. Ignoring Signals of Dehydration

Dehydration can become dangerous very quickly during stomach infection. Many people ignore symptoms until they become severe.

Watch for:

These signs mean the body urgently needs fluids.

6. Taking Strong Painkillers (NSAIDs)

People often take pain medicines like:

  • Ibuprofen
  • Diclofenac
  • Aspirin

These can irritate the stomach and worsen infection symptoms.

7. Overeating in the Name of “Weakness”

Many believe that eating more will give energy. But forcing heavy meals during an infection overloads the digestive system. The stomach needs rest, not pressure.

Correct approach:

  • Eat small, soft meals
  • Prioritize hydration
  • Gradually increase food quantity as symptoms improve

8. Drinking Tea, Coffee, or Energy Drinks

Caffeine increases stomach acid and worsens dehydration.

Avoid:

  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Energy drinks
  • Soft drinks
  • Cold drinks

Better options:

  • ORS
  • Coconut water
  • Rice kanji
  • Jeera water
  • Plain warm water

9. Ignoring Rest and Trying to Work

Many people continue working or attending school even with vomiting or diarrhea. This slows recovery and increases risk of spreading infection (especially in viral gastroenteritis).

What to do:

Rest is essential. The body heals faster when energy is not wasted on daily activity.

10. Eating Outside Food or Street Food During Recovery

Even after symptoms improve, the digestive system remains weak for days. Eating outside food too soon may trigger a relapse.

Avoid for at least 1 week:

  • Street food
  • Restaurant food
  • Packaged snacks
  • Cold drinks
  • Sweets

11. Not Washing Hands Properly

Stomach infections spread through:

  • Contaminated hands
  • Unwashed vegetables or fruits
  • Touching surfaces

Not washing hands after using the toilet or before eating can spread the infection to others at home.

What to do:

  • Wash hands with soap for 20 seconds
  • Use sanitizer when outside
  • Keep nails trimmed

12. Using Random Home Remedies

Some home remedies may worsen the condition, such as:

  • Drinking strong ginger juice
  • Taking too many spices
  • Consuming raw garlic
  • Having heavy kadhas
  • Drinking very hot water

These irritate the stomach lining.

Safe home remedies include:

  • ORS
  • Jeera water
  • Ginger water (mild, not strong)
  • Rice water
  • Moong dal soup

13. Not Replenishing Electrolytes

Just drinking water is not enough. Electrolytes are lost during diarrhea and vomiting, leading to weakness and muscle cramps.

Include:

  • ORS packets
  • Coconut water
  • Banana
  • Lemon water with a pinch of salt
  • Broth

14. Drinking Alcohol or Smoking

Alcohol is extremely harmful during a stomach infection. It dehydrates the body and damages the stomach lining. Smoking also worsens nausea and delays healing.

Important:

Avoid alcohol for at least 10–14 days after recovery.

15. Continuing Heavy Exercise or Gym Workouts

Working out during a stomach infection increases dehydration and weakness.

Better approach:

  • Take rest
  • Start with walking after recovery
  • Resume gym only after 4–5 days of normal eating

16. Ignoring Severe Symptoms

Many ignore warning signs assuming it’s “just a stomach bug”.

Seek medical help immediately if you notice:

  • Blood in stool
  • Severe dehydration
  • Continuous vomiting
  • High fever
  • Black or tar-like stool
  • Vomiting that contains blood
  • No improvement after 48 hours

These can indicate more serious conditions like typhoid, food poisoning, cholera, or gastric ulcers.

Ayurveda Tips for Faster Recovery

1. Start With Light Foods

Moong dal soup, khichdi, boiled rice, sabudana.

2. Use Digestive Herbs

  • Jeera
  • Ajwain
  • Fennel
  • Ginger
  • Amla

3. Stay Hydrated

Warm water, ORS, coconut water.

4. Avoid Cold Foods and Drinks

They slow digestion and increase cramps.

5. Strengthen Gut After Recovery

Take curd, buttermilk, or probiotics.

I was looking for a loan to settle my bills and debts, then I came across comments about blank ATM credit cards that can be hacked and withdrawn from any ATM nearby. I was skeptical, but decided to give it a try. I contacted (francoispinault807@gmail.com) and they gave me instructions on how the card works. I was assured that 10,000 euros can be withdrawn from the card instantly per day and 50,000,000 euros were credited to my account, so I applied for the card and paid the fee for which the card was sent to me. if you are intrested contact him Via Email: francoispinault807@gmail.com

Living with Herpes simplex was depression for me even with my doctor’s advice and medication. My name is Vicky Moore I live in Chicago, Illinois and this is my story. I browsed the Internet in search of remedies or something but unfortunately nothing new, all still had the same results. Sadly I almost quit on myself, it was around 7:30 in the morning when my therapist called me over to her house, at first I was skeptical, but I went anyways on getting there she was smiling and said there’s living proof now, she showed me a lady who also suffered from herpes simplex 3years back and now she is cured by a doctor who also studied natural herbs. I was amazed and lost for words I even doubted but showed me a doctor’s report test. So I contacted the doctor and weeks later, I was cured. So I would love to use this medium to say a big thank you to my therapist and Dr. Chalopa. This story is shared to others like me out there. However, he also treats other illnesses.
