Myths and Facts About Mpox Everyone Should Understand

Myths and Facts About Mpox Everyone Should Understand

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, has gained global attention due to its sudden outbreaks in several countries. While it is less contagious than many other viral infections, misinformation and myths often cause unnecessary fear and stigma. Understanding the facts about Mpox is essential for effective prevention, early recognition, and proper care.

This article aims to clarify common myths, present medical facts, and offer Ayurvedic insights to support overall immunity & well-being.

What Is Mpox?

Mpox is a viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the same family as the variola virus responsible for smallpox. Though it is primarily found in certain parts of Africa, sporadic outbreaks have been reported worldwide.

Common Symptoms

  • Fever and chills
  • Headache and muscle aches
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • A distinctive rash that progresses from flat red spots to raised lesions filled with fluid
  • Lesions can appear on the face, hands, feet, or genital area

The incubation period is usually 5–21 days, and while most cases are mild, severe infections can occur in immunocompromised individuals or children.

Common Myths About Mpox and the Facts

Myth 1: Mpox Only Affects Monkeys

Fact: Despite its name, Mpox primarily affects humans in outbreak situations. Humans contract the virus through close contact with infected animals or people, not just monkeys.

Myth 2: Mpox Spreads Easily Through Air

Fact: Mpox is not highly contagious like COVID-19. Transmission usually occurs via direct contact with body fluids, skin lesions, contaminated objects, or prolonged face-to-face exposure.

Myth 3: Only Certain Groups Can Get Mpox

Fact: Anyone can contract Mpox. Although some outbreaks may occur more frequently in specific communities, the virus does not discriminate based on age, gender, or sexual orientation.

Myth 4: There Is No Treatment for Mpox

Fact: While there is no Mpox-specific cure, symptomatic management, antiviral therapy, and supportive care are effective. Vaccines like the smallpox vaccine may also provide protection in high-risk cases.

Myth 5: Mpox Is Always Fatal

Fact: Most Mpox cases are mild and self-limiting, resolving within 2–4 weeks. Fatalities are uncommon and usually associated with severe infections in vulnerable individuals.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Mpox

In Ayurveda, viral infections like Mpox are often linked to aggravation of Pitta and Rakta doshas, causing inflammation, skin eruptions, fever, and fatigue. Though Ayurveda cannot replace medical treatment for Mpox, it offers complementary approaches to support immunity and reduce discomfort.

Ayurvedic Measures to Support Recovery

  • Herbal Immunity Boosters: Herbs like Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), and Turmeric (Curcuma longa) enhance immune function and reduce inflammation.
  • Cooling Foods: Include cucumbers, melons, coconut water, and leafy greens to balance Pitta and support skin health.
  • Topical Care: Soothing pastes of aloe vera or sandalwood may help relieve irritation from rashes.
  • Lifestyle Practices: Adequate rest, hydration, and stress management help the body recover more efficiently.

These Ayurvedic measures are supportive, not curative, and should be combined with proper medical care.

Prevention Tips for Mpox

1. Avoid Direct Contact

Do not touch skin lesions, body fluids, or contaminated objects of an infected person.

2. Maintain Hygiene

Frequent handwashing with soap and water is critical. Disinfect surfaces and personal items like bedding and towels.

3. Use Protective Measures

During outbreaks, wear masks, gloves, or protective clothing when caring for infected individuals.

4. Isolate If Infected

Self-isolation during active symptoms reduces the risk of transmission to others.

5. Vaccination Awareness

High-risk individuals may benefit from smallpox or Mpox-specific vaccines under medical guidance.

Why Awareness Is Important

Misinformation about Mpox can lead to unnecessary panic, stigma, and unsafe practices. Understanding the facts and myths helps communities:

  • Protect vulnerable populations
  • Recognize symptoms early
  • Seek timely medical care
  • Follow preventive measures effectively

Education and awareness are the most powerful tools to limit outbreaks and reduce fear.
