Skincare is absolutely essential in the summer season. Our skin reacts to the environment, it resides in. During the summer season, our bodies (and more specifically, our skin) are bombarded with ultraviolet rays of the sun. The natural reaction to these incident sun rays is the darkening of the skin. Darkening of the skin is something that a lot of people try to avoid. Darkening in the form of uneven patches on the skin is a concern, especially among the common folk. Along with darkening of the skin, are other factors that may affect your health during the Summer season.
One advantage of summer, though, is the fresh produce of fruits and vegetables that are available throughout the season. Fruits and vegetables are the most beneficial of all the food groups. They are packed with all the necessary vitamins and minerals that are required for our bodies. Fruits and vegetables are also important for gut health. The bacteria in our gut need their own source of food, called ‘Prebiotic foods’. These prebiotic foods are necessary for the bacteria to survive. Since our gut bacteria form the source of our immunity, consumption of sufficient fruits and vegetables will be essential for good health care in the summer season.
Another important guideline during the summer season is plenty of intake of water. The high heat and sweat can leave a person dehydrated quickly. One mistake that a lot of people make, is they eat food instead of drinking adequate water. To elaborate, people that spend a lot of time indoors, tend to fail in differentiating between their hunger pangs and their thirst. As a result, people end up eating food when they should actually be doing, is drinking enough water. One can even customize their hydration sources with fruit flavoured waters and coconut water.
Health care in the Summer Season is absolutely necessary to deal with the numerous health problems that an individual can face. One common problem that affects people is Heatstroke. Heatstroke, also called Hypothermia, occurs when there is a rise in the amount of heat in an individual’s body. It isn’t something to be overlooked as a heat stroke can cause a person to lose consciousness. Losing consciousness can be dangerous if the person losing it, is in a risky situation, for example, crossing a road, climbing a ladder, etc. Keeping heat strokes at bay involves simple steps such as getting enough hydration, wearing loose, light, and comfortable clothes and avoiding exerting oneself, physically and mentally.
A number of people experience spasms/cramps in summer. These spasms are usually connected to any physical activity that causes greater-than-usual strain on the body. The best remedy for it would be to rest in a cool area. Every now and then, it is important to take time to give your body, the rest it needs. Clear juices or drinks that are rich in electrolytes are excellent options to replenish the body with the necessary nutrients and minerals. We do not realize this, but a lot of times, small deficiencies can have major effects on our bodies.
Following are some more tips on health care in summer season:-
- Include salads in meals
- Use cold water externally, for skin applications
- Use objects like hats and sunglasses, whenever required
- Use natural substances like lemon or honey, to treat skin
- Exfoliate your skin regularly
The above tips are essential when you are spending too much time in the sun. Although long durations of sun exposure can be harmful, one should remember not to avoid sunlight completely as sunlight does more good, than harm for the body.
Another thing to remember is to not avoid exercise during the summer season. A lot of people use excessive sweating in the hot summer climate, as a reason to avoid sweating it out in exercise sessions. However, what people don’t realize is that sweating is a sign of your body adjusting to the surrounding temperatures. Sweating isn’t directly correlated to calorie-burning activities and is more of a by-product of homeostasis taking place. Lack of physical activity will offer absolutely no respite from the summer season and it would be better if an individual maintained his/her regular physical activity throughout.
