Unfortunately, the downside of this unavoidable summer situation for females is the increased probability of developing Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). The uncomfortable and bothersome pain experienced while urinating is more common during the summer months for various reasons.
Let’s understand why UTIs are more common in the summer and how to prevent them to protect your summer days from discomfort and pain.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur when harmful bacteria enter the urethra and reproduce. Various strains of bacteria, such as E. Coli, responsible for UTIs usually originate from the anal area or sources like wet bathing suits and freshwater. To prevent these infections, it is commonly recommended to wipe from front to back, urinate after intercourse, clean the area with water or a mild cleanser during showers, and, crucially, maintain proper hydration.
Staying hydrated is crucial in preventing UTIs, especially during the summer when they are more common. Ayurveda recommends drinking at least 60 ounces of water daily to avoid dehydration, which is easier to prevent than to address once it occurs. Hydration plays a significant role in UTI prevention by affecting vulva moisture, urination frequency, and levels of bacteria in the body. Insufficient water intake can reduce urination, leading to a higher risk of UTIs.

Wearing wet bathing suits is not a direct cause of UTIs, but the damp, non-absorbent fabric provides a breeding ground for bacteria. To minimise this risk, changing out of wet bathing suits after swimming for 30 minutes or more is advised. Bathing suits are designed to protect the body while swimming, so they should be avoided only partially. However, prolonged wear of wet, non-breathable material over the vulva, combined with dehydration, can increase the likelihood of developing a UTI.
Contracting a UTI during the summer is like facing multiple challenges at once. While alcohol doesn’t directly cause a UTI, it can contribute to dehydration. To minimise the risk of bacteria entering your urethra, staying hydrated is important.

Why are UTIs more common among younger women during the summer months?
The rate of UTI hospitalizations increased at a higher pace among women compared to men. An interesting observation was the seasonal variation in UTI occurrences across different age groups. The summer peak of UTIs was particularly noticeable in younger women under the age of 44, whereas older women experienced consistent UTI hospitalizations throughout the year.
Several potential factors contribute to the higher incidence of UTI hospitalizations during the summer:
1. Dehydration is more prevalent in the summer, a known trigger and risk factor for UTIs.
2. Younger females are likely to spend more time outdoors during the summer, increasing their exposure to dehydration.
3. Increased sexual activity during the summer, especially among younger age groups, is another risk factor for UTIs in women.
4. The use of antibiotics to treat previous UTIs can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Given the common occurrence of UTIs in women (and men), it is important to be prepared with ayurvedic home remedies.

6 UTI Home Remedies for Effective Relief:
While it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment of UTIs, some home remedies may help alleviate symptoms and support the healing process. Here are a few remedies to consider:
1. Fresh celery juice: Celery juice is known for its diuretic properties and can help flush out bacteria from the urinary tract. Start with small amounts and gradually work up to 32 ounces daily.
2. Aloe vera: Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that may help soothe UTI symptoms. Consume 2 or more inches of fresh gel (skin removed) daily.
3. Amla berry: Amla berries, also known as Indian gooseberries, are rich in vitamin C and have antimicrobial properties. Take 2 teaspoons twice a day to support the immune system.
4. Barley grass juice powder: Barley grass juice powder is a natural detoxifier that can help cleanse the urinary tract. Take 2 teaspoons or 6 capsules daily.
5. Hibiscus tea: Hibiscus tea has antibacterial properties and can help reduce inflammation. Drink 2 cups daily to support urinary tract health.
6. Cranberry leaf tea: Cranberry leaf tea, similar to cranberry juice, contains proanthocyanins that can prevent bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract walls. Enjoy a cup or two daily to support urinary health.
