Before we dive into the remedies to cure sinus let us first look at what sinus really is. How is it caused and why people get it? Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. Healthy sinuses are filled with air. But when they become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection. Conditions that can cause sinus blockage to include:
- The common cold
- Allergic rhinitis, which is swelling of the lining of the nose
- Small growths in the lining of the nose called nasal polyps
- A deviated septum, which is a shift in the nasal cavity
People usually don’t like to visit doctors thinking it will go away. However, taking precautions and home remedies that are easier on the pocket yet very effectual; then a mixture of chemicals in forms of tablets entering your body causing you to have side effects.
Here are some home remedies and tips for you to help get rid of the sinus.
- Take Steam
The hot water vapour can help moisten the sinuses. Adding a bit of eucalyptus or even menthol while taking a shower or a bath will help you ease sinus. The steam will help dampen it. A hot, steamy shower or bath can also help to loosen up mucus and debris that is stuck inside your nose
- Drink Up
Keeping yourself hydrated is very important. Drink warm water throughout the day, and make sure to steer clear of caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, which can cause dehydration.
- Spice it up
Spicy food can also help as it will let the moisture reach your nose and drain out the sinus. Spicy foods such as mustard, hot peppers, curry, horseradish, and wasabi may help clear sinuses. If you like spice, consider adding some “hot” spices to your meals to open your nasal passages.
- Apply warm compress
Keeping your nasal passage warm will help get moisture back into your nose. You can use a warm compress to help keep the nasal tissues moist, or, fill a deep bowl or pot with steaming water and place your face over it with a towel around your head to breathe the steam in.” Just be careful not to burn yourself. You can also follow up with the warm compress with a cold compress, which may help relieve sinus pain.
- Grapefruit seed extract
Grapefruit is a natural antibiotic. Grinding the seeds and pulp into a fine powder this helps clear out mucus and may prevent other microbial contaminations from taking over when you have an inflamed sinus.
- Turmeric
The roots of turmeric are wonderful. When combined with spicy ginger root and mixed with tea it will make you feel better all around. Ginger root also has the added bonus of helping you clear out an upset stomach.
- Garlic
Pour one drop each of garlic juice to each nostril daily for 15 days relieve chronic sinus problems. Garlic is hot, penetrating and anti-inflammatory. Thus, helps to relieve the sinus blocks.
- Onions
Chop onions into tiny pieces and place it in a pot of boiling water. Let it boil for five minutes. Put a bit of that mixture in a bowl and inhale the steam. This will relieve the clogged nose. You could also drink the mixture.
- Horseradish
This is also an effective cure. Grate the radish into pieces and hold a pinch of it in your mouth. Leave it there for a couple of minutes. You will start to feel the flavour of it rushing to your nose as it eases your sinus and dissolves the mucus formed.
- Know when to see a doctor
As said before, people may feel like going to the doctor is useless yet if your sinus becomes worse, it is better to get an expert opinion. If sinus pain lasts for a week or more and you have a fever, you should see an ear, nose and throat specialist, because you may need more aggressive treatment than natural remedies provide.

Lessen the intake of infection-causing foods such as fried and starchy foods, rice, meat and strong spices. Prevention is always better than cure.
