Ayurvedic Treatment For Rheumatoid Arthritis

“Not every day is good, but there is something good in every day”.

For those who suffer from Arthritis especially Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), face the reality of being in constant pain, stiff joints, inflammation and feeling down because of it. Your entire existence suddenly becomes all about the pain and nobody wants to live like that. Rheumatoid arthritis treatment has evolved over the years but another treatment is slowly gaining popularity and that is the Ayurvedic rheumatoid arthritis treatment.

But we before we look at what Ayurvedic rheumatoid arthritis treatment is all about, a lot of you may not know exactly what RA is or what sort of symptoms come under it. But, first questions first-

How do you know whether you suffer from Arthritis or not?

Watch out for symptoms like:

  • Morning stiffness and pain in the legs and finger joints.
  • Bouts of pain in the neck, back and shoulder. Very restricted movements.
  • Frequent pain and swelling in ankle joints, knee joints and muscles.
  • Chronic back pain and pain in neck and knee joints.
  • Difficulty in doing basic activities walking, sitting on the floor and climbing steps.

RA or rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of autoimmune arthritis there is. A known fact is that 1–3 per cent of women may get rheumatoid arthritis in their lifetime. The disease usually begins between the fourth and sixth decades of life. However, RA can start at any age and can be increasingly demoralizing and incapacitating. Which is why a lot of research has been going on into rheumatoid arthritis treatment.

RA is a long –term, chronic disease that causes a lot of pain, stiffness, swelling, limited motion and decreased function of many joints. RA can affect any joint, but the smaller joints, especially in the hands and feet tend to be involved most often. Inflammation can sometimes affect organs such as eyes and lungs as well.

The stiffness experienced in active RA is the worst in the morning. It can last from one to two hours or the whole day. This stiffness can be very painful but also cause a lot of frustration and definitely slows down your ability to move. Sometimes people just spend the whole at home resting because moving which seems so natural for humans to do seems so difficult.

Signs and symptoms that can occur in RA include:

  • Loss of energy
  • Dry eyes and mouth from a related health problem, Sjogren’s syndrome
  • Low fevers
  • Loss of appetite
  • Firm lumps known as rheumatoid nodules grow beneath the skin in places such as the elbow and hands. Gently feel for such lumps.

Why is it that you suffer from chronic pain? The Ayurvedic explanation

As per the traditional wisdom which is more than 5000 years old, we suffer from chronic pain because of excess Vata (air) in the body. When too much gas or air settles in the joints and bones, it creates stiffness, pain and slowly starts the degeneration process. Too much of Aam (the toxic mucus) as a result of poor digestion starts to settle in the joints, back, neck or spine. It causes swelling, spondylitis or slip disc.

When your immune system starts attacking the linings of your joints initially you feel pain, stiffness and inflammation coupled with redness in fingers and difficulty to even fold your fingers. Finally, this spreads further in knee and finally to all joints. Ayurvedic rheumatoid arthritis treatment focuses on all these points especially on reducing inflammation.

Excess of Vata and Aama creates a lot of stiffness and pain. Due to this excess, you experience difficulty in walking, inability to bend your back, chronic pain in joints, deformed fingers, you get frequent fever and infections and so on.
