What is Anemia?
Anaemia, a condition marked by a shortage of red blood cells or haemoglobin in the blood, can cause tiredness, weakness, and reduced oxygen delivery to the body’s tissues. While modern medicine offers various treatments, Ayurveda, an ancient Indian holistic healing system, provides valuable insights and natural remedies for managing anaemia.
In Ayurveda, anaemia is seen as a result of imbalances in the body’s three essential energies or doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. According to this traditional practice, anaemia is mainly caused by Pitta imbalances, which can be influenced by poor digestion, weak Agni (digestive fire), and improper diet.
Causes of anaemia in Ayurveda include weak digestion leading to poor absorption of nutrients, Pitta imbalance affecting blood quality, inadequate intake of iron-rich foods, deficiency of Vitamin B12, and presence of intestinal parasites in children disrupting nutrient absorption.

How can an Individual Recognize Low Haemoglobin Levels in their Blood?
The initial sign often noticed is a sense of fatigue in the body. When haemoglobin levels drop, the individual may experience weakness and their skin may appear pale. Observers may comment on a yellowish or whitish complexion, indicative of a condition known as pandu, characterized by a mix of yellow and white hues. In severe cases of low haemoglobin, there may be swelling in the body. These early symptoms serve as indicators of a decrease in haemoglobin levels. The individual might also experience breathlessness even after light activities or while climbing stairs, especially if they have no history of asthma. This lack of stamina is a key sign that the person may be suffering from anaemia.
Physical appearance plays a crucial role in detection. Examination of the conjunctiva for pallor often prompts further investigation through blood tests. If the haemoglobin levels are below the standard range, a primary diagnosis of anaemia is made. Anaemia itself is a condition, but it can also be a symptom of various other underlying diseases. Subsequently, the root cause of the anaemia is identified to tailor appropriate treatment.
What is the Normal Haemoglobin Level in the Human Body?
Typically, a normal haemoglobin level in women is considered to be between 12-14 grams per deciliter of blood, while in men, it is between 13-15 grams per deciliter. These ranges are generally regarded as the ideal levels of haemoglobin in the human body.
Why do ideal Haemoglobin Levels Differ Between Males and Females?
The difference in ideal haemoglobin levels between males and females can be attributed to the menstrual cycle in women, which often leads to blood loss. This factor is likely the primary reason for the variation in haemoglobin levels between the two genders.
