Monsoons are what everyone waits for, at the end of the summer season. The first few showers seem like a blessing in disguise as at this point. People have had enough of the scorching heat and debilitating humidity. Forget people, even animals seem to stare at the skies, waiting for the clouds to gather and pour torrents and gushes of water droplets from above. However, all things in the universe come with their advantages and disadvantages. The monsoon, along with the refreshing showers and cool climate, brings with it all sorts of diseases that spread pretty quickly because of all the moisture in the air.
Right from food to water to the urban infrastructure, everything can be a breeding ground for diseases. These diseases can lead to complications and serious health problems in an individual. Monsoon diseases prevention and cure are therefore essential to living a healthy life.
Following are some diseases that spread quickly, during the monsoons:-
- Typhoid
- Water-borne infections
- Food-borne infections
- Diarrhea
- Cold
- Flu
- Malaria
All the above diseases are communicable in nature and constant care should be taken to stay wary of them. Taking some precautions can help keep individual and their families safe from the above-mentioned diseases.
Sanitation
Children should be taught to use a hand sanitizer after they come back home from playing in the monsoons. Children should also be taught how to wash their hands properly after coming home from outside. As they say, early habits die hard.
Stay Indoors
Children (especially babies) should be asked to stay indoors as, during the monsoons, the air consists of a number of different pathogens and other harmful microbes. Especially avoid the first showers as those showers can be acidic rain. Acidic rain is when the rainwater in the air gets mixed with all the acid present in the gases and effluents released by industries and corporations.
Monsoon diseases prevention and cure should be something that all children are aware of, so as to prevent the passing of diseases from one child to another. It is well known that uncontrolled management of any communicable disease can very well lead to disease. Knowing the symptoms of a disease is essential to identify the disease before it progresses any further. Following are some symptoms of Malaria, a pretty common monsoon disease:
- Aching pain in the head
- Pain in the muscles
- Sweating
- Shivering
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- High fever
A word of caution is that the symptoms of malaria are usually seen 10-15 days after the person is bitten. To avoid being bit, wearing full sleeves would be advisable. Mosquito repellents could also be used in homes to drive the mosquitoes away. Avoid water from being in one place for too long. Stagnation of water is a major cause of malaria is spread. Because of the warm/wet climate, skin infections are also pretty common during the monsoons.
Another dangerous disease is Dengue. Following are some symptoms of Dengue:
- Black stools
- Feeling restless
- Unexplained itching
- Pain in the stomach
- Body aches
- Inflammation in bladder/liver
- Nausea/vomiting
- Unexpected high fever
A lot of people wait to go out in the rains, get wet, and enjoy. However, getting caught in the rain could lead to deadly diseases, and therefore, the experience is never truly worth it.
Cholera is another disease that spreads quickly in the monsoons. This disease is caused due to the food and water getting contaminated. Unhygienic conditions are also a major contributor to Cholera. The most common symptom of cholera is diarrhea. These symptoms can be followed by vomiting and cramps in the muscles.
The best way to avoid getting Cholera is to get vaccinated against it. Avoiding dairy foods is recommended as it can contain unpasteurized milk which can lead to infections. Avoid fruits and vegetables that are cut and peeled from sources unknown to you. Always eat from sources that you can trust. Sushi and other forms of raw and uncooked food should also be avoided. Eating food that is hot and cooked fresh would be the go-to norm during the monsoons. Food sold by street vendors is a complete no-no.
