What is a Slipped Disc or Herniated Disc?
Intervertebral disc herniation, commonly called a “slipped disc,” is a common degenerative spinal condition that is a major cause of disability worldwide. It is well-known for causing lower back pain.
The discs, which are located between each vertebra, serve to cushion and separate the bones in the spine, allowing for flexibility and shock absorption. The discs are made up of a tough outer layer called the annulus fibrosis and a jelly-like inner tissue called the nucleus pulposus. These tissues act as a cushions during stress and can hold a significant amount of water, contributing to a portion of the weight in the body.
The global market for treatments of slipped discs was worth $8192.7 million in 2021 and is estimated to grow to $11112.5 million by 2031. This growth represents a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 3.1% during the forecast period. The market is anticipated to increase at an annual rate of 5.13% from 2021 to 2028, primarily due to the growing number of elderly individuals requiring treatment for slipped discs.
What are the symptoms of Slipped Discs?
A slipped disc can occur in any part of the spine, from the neck to the lower back, with the lower back being a common area for this condition. The spinal column contains a complex network of nerves and blood vessels, and a slipped disc can cause added pressure on the surrounding nerves and muscles.
Symptoms of a slipped disc may include:
- Pain and numbness, typically on one side of the body
- Pain that radiates to the arms or legs, worsening pain at night or with specific movements, increased pain after standing or sitting
- Discomfort when walking short distances
- Unexplained muscle weakness, and tingling, aching, or burning sensations in the affected area.
The type and severity of pain experienced can vary among individuals. It is important to consult a doctor if the pain leads to numbness or tingling that affects muscle control.
What does Ayurveda say about Slipped Discs or Herniated Disc?
In Ayurveda, slip disc is not directly mentioned, but it is believed to be caused by an imbalance of vata dosha and kapha dosha based on the symptoms. Factors such as consuming dry, cold, and astringent foods, suppressing natural urges, experiencing grief, fear, anger, and other factors can disturb vata dosha. Kapha dosha is responsible for providing structural stability to tissues, and in a slipped disc, the disc structure is damaged, leading to various symptoms depending on the dosha imbalance.
What are the causes of a Slipped Disc or Herniated Disc?
The reasons behind a slipped (herniated or prolapsed) disc are diverse and can result from a mix of internal and external factors. Here are some of the primary causes:
1. Aging and Degenerative Changes:
As individuals grow older, the intervertebral discs lose moisture, becoming less flexible and more prone to tears or ruptures. This natural process, known as disc degeneration, commonly leads to slipped discs in the elderly.
2. Mechanical Stress:
Incorrect lifting techniques, such as using the back instead of the legs to lift heavy objects, can place excessive mechanical stress on the spinal discs, causing them to slip out of position.
3. Trauma or Injury:
Accidents falls, or any high-impact trauma can cause immediate damage to the discs, resulting in a slipped disc.
4. Obesity:
Excess weight adds stress to the spinal column, contributing to disc wear and tear.
5. Sedentary Lifestyle:
Lack of physical activity weakens the spine-supporting muscles, making discs more susceptible to slipping.
6. Genetic Predisposition:
Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to spinal issues, including slipped discs, especially if there is a family history of back problems.
7. Poor Posture:
Prolonged poor posture, particularly during extended periods of sitting, can lead to uneven weight distribution and pressure on the spine and discs.
8. Occupational Hazards:
Jobs involving repetitive lifting, bending, or twisting motions can heighten the risk of a slipped disc.
9. Smoking:
Tobacco use is thought to contribute to disc degeneration and may increase the likelihood of a slipped disc.
10. Medical Conditions:
Certain medical conditions, such as connective tissue disorders, can make individuals more prone to spinal problems, including slipped discs.
Ayurvedic Management for Slipped Disc or Herniated Disc
Ayurvedic treatment for herniated discs involves a comprehensive approach that includes detoxifying the body, adjusting the diet, and strengthening muscles.
- Panchakarma, a detox procedure, helps eliminate toxins. Specific foods can aid in improving the condition.
- Unlike conventional medicine, Ayurveda offers non-invasive treatment options with minimal side effects.
- By restoring balance to the body’s elements, Ayurvedic treatment aims to cure slipped discs without surgery or medication.
How does Panchakarma aid in the treatment of a slipped disc?
According to Ayurvedic practitioners, Panchakarma plays a crucial role in maintaining a toxin-free body and eliminating excess Dosha, thereby reducing pressure on the affected area, such as the slipped disc region. The results are often described as almost magical. If conventional methods like Ayurvedic oils or medications have not provided sufficient pain relief, undergoing Panchakarma treatment may be a worthwhile consideration for a complete cure.
Kati Basti for Lumbar Spine Slip Disc
Kati Basti is an Ayurvedic treatment technique for slipped discs, involving the application of medicated oil or ghee on the patient’s back at regular intervals. This process helps alleviate pressure on the spinal nerves, offering relief from pain. Patients commonly experience immediate pain relief with this treatment, which tends to last longer compared to other methods.
Greeva Basti for Cervical Spine Slip Disc
Greeva Basti is another Ayurvedic treatment approach for slipped discs, where medicated oil or ghee is applied to the patient’s neck at regular intervals. This method helps reduce pressure on the spinal nerves, providing relief from pain. Patients often find immediate pain relief with this treatment, which also offers longer-lasting results compared to alternative methods.
Lepam for Slip Disc
Utilizing lepam can be highly beneficial. Lepam involves applying a herbal paste to the affected area, which not only relieves pain but also reduces swelling and tissue damage associated with slipped discs. This application enhances blood circulation to the region, promoting healing over time. For faster results, internal consumption of lepam alongside external application is recommended. The specific herbs required will vary based on the location of the herniation, whether cervical or lumbar. In most cases, a combination of Kapikachhu (Mucuna pruriens) powder, Laksha Gavya (cow’s ghee), and Yava Sara Thaila (oat kernel) is utilized. These herbs aid in alleviating nerve root compression and offering pain relief.
