Today we will talk about a topic that many of us have experienced at one point or another – SUNBURN! Whether you spent a little too much time soaking up the rays at the beach or forgot to reapply sunscreen during a day out in the sun, sunburn can happen to the best of us.
It is important to understand the different remedies for sunburn that are available. While most over-the-counter solutions contain steroids, this blog will highlight natural alternatives for preventing and treating sunburn.
What is Sunburn?
Sunburn is a skin reaction that occurs when your skin is exposed to too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. This can cause your skin to become red, swollen, and painful to the touch. In severe cases, sunburn can even lead to blistering and peeling.
There are a few factors that can increase your risk of getting sunburned. These includes:
- Fair skin
- History of sunburns
- Spending long periods in the sun without protection
- Taking certain medications that make your skin more sensitive to UV radiation
Symptoms of Sunburn:
Some common symptoms of sunburn include:
- Redness
- Pain
- Swelling
- Blisters
- Peeling
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to take action to help your skin heal.
Complications of sunburn can include dehydration, heat exhaustion, and in severe cases, sun poisoning. It’s important to take sunburn seriously and take steps to prevent it whenever possible.
5 Ayurvedic Natural Remedies To Soothe Sunburn:
1. Coconut oil is another great option, as it can help moisturize and nourish your skin while reducing redness and swelling.
2. Aloe vera gel is a popular choice for sunburn relief, as it has cooling and healing properties that can help reduce inflammation and promote skin healing. (skin patch is recommended) If you have access to an Aloe Vera plant, it is recommended to extract the gel directly from the plant for immediate relief. Coconut oil can also provide quick relief for minor sunburn.
3. A combination of turmeric, yoghurt, and barley in equal amounts can be applied to sunburned skin for relief. Additionally, using cooling compresses, soothing gels, or creams containing ingredients like sandal oil, aloe Vera, sandal paste, lettuce pulp, rose oil, or a mixture of vinegar and olive oil can also help.
4. Mixing sandalwood and turmeric paste with a little water in equal proportions can also help soothe sunburned skin. Cow milk can be used by soaking a gauze pad in it and applying it to the affected area for a cooling effect.
5. Ayurvedic oils such as Madhuyashtyadi, chandanadi, Ksheerabala, pinda Thailam, and Dhanwantharam, as well as other Ayurvedic medicines like Manjishtha, Triphala, Amalaki, Saariva, Usheer, Mandukpami, Gokshur, and Haridra, are effective in treating sunburn. Ayurvedic ointments made from Saariva, manjistha, Chandan, usher, Haridra, yashtimadhu, and mandukparni can also be applied to sunburned areas.
In addition to these remedies, there are also some preventive measures you can take to avoid getting sunburned in the first place. Always wear natural herbal sunscreen with at least SPF 30, seek shade during the hottest parts of the day, wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Prevention is Key: Protecting Your Skin from the Sun
- To shield your skin from the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, it’s best to minimize exposure.
- Avoid being out in the sun, especially between 12 noon and 4 pm, when the rays are strongest. If you must go outside during these hours, try to cover up or limit skin exposure.
- Before heading out on a sunny day, mix a few drops of neem oil with sesame oil and apply it to your skin as a natural sunblock. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is also important.
- Using neem oil on your skin before and after showering can help nourish your skin, especially when combined with sesame oil or coconut oil. Indian Aloe is another effective sun protector that can be applied before sun exposure.
- During the summer, it’s advisable to avoid spicy, fermented, oily, and caffeinated foods. Opt for fluids to keep your skin hydrated and protect against UV rays.
- Sandalwood paste is a natural sunscreen that provides good protection against sunburn.
- Drinking plenty of fluids before going out in the sun, including watermelon juice, and coconut water, can help keep your body hydrated and reduce the harmful effects of the sun’s rays.
