What is Constipation?
Constipation is generally described as having less than three bowel movements per week. Chronic constipation refers to infrequent constipation or difficulty in the passing of stool that lasts for a period of time or more. Constipation is a term used to describe the bowel movements which are irregular or are difficult to go through. Constipation is one of the main causes of painful defecation.
According to Ayurveda, due to improper diet and lifestyle, Aam is formed and Doshas get aggravated, especially Vata. Its digestive secretions decrease and makes it unable to digest the food properly. Vata which is predominantly vitiated causes the stools to become hard and less bowel movement. This is known as Constipation.
Symptoms of Constipation:
Constipation is like a stubborn guest who refuses to leave your body’s party. It’s when your stools decide to play hide-and-seek and become super tricky to pass, or sometimes they just stop moving altogether for a while. But don’t worry, constipation doesn’t like to travel alone! It usually brings along a bunch of buddies to let you know it’s in town.
Look out for these symptoms:
- Pushing too hard while trying to go to the bathroom (The “I’m trying so hard” Strain): Ever felt like you’re putting all your strength into a bowel movement? That’s the classic sign of constipation when your body goes into full-on push mode.
- Not being able to go at all (The No-Show Movement): Uh-oh, it’s time to go, but your bowels are taking an unauthorized vacation. It’s frustrating when you can’t seem to have a proper bathroom break.
- Feeling like you didn’t finish the job (The Incomplete Finale): Imagine watching a movie, and just as it’s about to end, the screen goes blank. That’s how it feels when you have a sense that your bowel movement wasn’t completed. Talk about an unsatisfying cliffhanger!
- Sensation of being all clogged up (The Traffic Jam Sensation): Ever been stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic? Well, constipation can make you feel like there’s a roadblock in your digestive system. It’s that uncomfortable sensation of being all blocked up.
As a bonus, the actual appearance of the stools can be as dry, hard, and pellet-like as little rabbit droppings (although they don’t have to look that way for constipation to be on the scene). So if you’ve experienced any of these symptoms, constipation might just be the party crasher you’re dealing with.

14 Common Causes of Constipation
There are a wide range of reasons for constipation, and keeping in mind that many are moderately minor and simple to redress, chronic constipation can be an indication of a more serious health ailment, so make certain to examine changes in your bowel habits. Common causes for constipation include:
- Less intake of water or overconsumption of dry/unctuous (ruksha) substances.
- Consuming a low-fiber diet
- Lack of physical exercise
- Delaying the urge to have a bowel movement
- Changes in daily diet or activities
- Excessive Stress (manasthapa)
- Pregnancy
- Certain medications (especially strong painkillers, narcotics, antidepressants, iron pills)
- Problems with the colon and/or rectum
- Certain diseases i.e., Colon Cancer, Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS)
- Ulcerative Thyroid (Hypothyroidism)
- Excessive Sleeping during day or Insomnia
- Eating disorders
- Over-eating
When Should I worry about Constipation?
It’s generally a good idea to talk with your doctor if you notice any change in your daily bowel movements, yet look for an effective Ayurveda treatment that eliminates the root cause of constipation. Opting for natural treatment is always a wise idea because they don’t cause severe side effects to your health.
- Unexpected constipation that is accompanied by a stomach-ache.
- Complete inability to pass stool or gas.
- Experiencing severe pain while passing stool.
- Blood in the stool.
- Change in the size, shape, and consistency of your stool.
- Constipation that has lasted over about 2 weeks.
What are the Complications – Constipation can cause?
- Piles or Hemorrhoids: Struggling with excessive straining can result in swollen veins around the anus, leading to piles or hemorrhoids. They can be internal or external, causing itching and pain during bowel movements. Internal piles may cause bright red streaks in the stools.
- Anal Fissure: Passing hard, lumpy stools can cause tears in the anal skin, resulting in anal fissures. This condition is extremely painful, and you may notice blood on your stools.
- Rectal Bleeding: If you experience bright red stools after a bowel movement, it could be a sign of rectal bleeding. This bleeding is often caused by piles or anal fissures.
- Fecal Impaction: Prolonged constipation can cause the stools to become extremely hard, making it difficult for them to pass during regular bowel movements. This condition is known as fecal impaction and may require treatment with medications or enemas.
- Stool Leaking in Children: Children who avoid bowel movements due to straining and pain may experience stool leakage, leading to the soiling of clothes.
- Serious Complications in Older Adults: Chronic constipation in older adults can potentially result in bowel obstruction or bowel perforation, which can be life-threatening.
It’s essential to get proper treatment if you experience any of these complications to ensure appropriate treatment and prevent further complications.

Detox Therapy (Panchakarma)
Detox is the Ayurvedic cleansing process for body, mind and emotions that helps you to create holistic health and well-being in your life. Digestive impurities such as mucus and metabolic toxins pile up in the veins, intestine, liver and joints. They circulate throughout the entire body and block the system. Continuous build-up of these impurities can cause physical and mental disorders and disease. A Detox helps to clean out toxins. Marma points help to remove blockages and improve circulation.
The type of detox will depend on the chronicity and severity of the problem.
- Smart detox
- Dynamic detox
- Power detox
- Super detox
It may include Virechan and Basti.
- Virechan : Virechan is the sedated purgation treatment that scrubs the body from the Pitta Dosha and eliminates toxins from the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and nerve bladder.
- Basti: Basti is the Sanskrit name for the urinary bladder. The colon is the main organ that absorbs all the nutrients. A healthy, functioning colon is imperative for the proper assimilation of nutrients. The colon is related to all other organs and tissues, so the entire body is healed and rejuvenated by cleansing and toning the colon.
