Vaginal yeast infections, also known as candidiasis, are fungal infections that can cause discomfort, discharge, and intense itching in the vaginal area. This condition, caused by the fungus Candida albicans, affects many women at some point in their lives. It’s important to note that while vaginal yeast infections are not considered sexually transmitted diseases, there is a risk of infection during first sexual intercourse, and women who are not sexually active can also be affected and most importantly yeast infections are contagious.
The imbalance of lactobacillus bacteria in the vaginal area can lead to an overgrowth of yeast, resulting in a yeast infection. Factors such as antibiotic use, pregnancy, uncontrolled diabetes, compromised immune system, hormonal imbalance, stress, and poor sleep can contribute to this imbalance.
What are the Symptoms of vaginal yeast infections?
Symptoms of vaginal yeast infections include
- Itching and irritation
- Burning during urination or sexual intercourse
- Pain, redness, swelling, rashes, and unusual discharge.
In Ayurveda, this condition is considered an imbalance of the Kapha Doshas, leading to what is termed as Kaphaja yoni vyapata—an imbalance in the vaginal flora. Herbal remedies in Ayurveda focus on balancing the Kapha dosha, maintaining a healthy diet, proper personal hygiene, and improving digestion. Formulations such as Gandhaka Rasayana, Neem powders or pastes, Pradrantak Churna, and Nirgundi Oil are commonly used to provide relief from the infection.
4 Ayurvedic Home Remedies for Vaginal Yeast Infections:
1. Tea Tree Oil and Honey:
Dilute 2-3 drops of tea tree oil in warm water and add a spoonful of honey. Apply this mixture to the affected area using a cotton ball to soothe dry, inflamed skin.
2. Aloe Vera Gel:
Fresh aloe vera gel has soothing and moisturizing properties that can provide immediate relief from irritated, inflamed, itchy skin. It also has antimicrobial properties that can help restrict the growth of infection-causing bacteria or fungi.
3. Virgin Coconut Oil:
This oil has multifaceted properties, including being anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral. It can help inhibit the growth of fungus or bacteria in the vaginal area and soothe dry, inflamed, irritated skin.
Gently applying on the affected area with a thin layer of coconut oil and leaving it on for 30 minutes before washing off with cool water can help alleviate the discomfort associated with a vaginal yeast infection. These natural remedies, along with Ayurvedic herbal medicines and therapies, can provide relief for those experiencing this uncomfortable condition.
4. Garlic:
Garlic has natural anti-fungal properties that can help combat yeast infections. You can consume raw garlic to help alleviate the infection.
