Thyroid disorders have become increasingly general in today’s society, impacting a significant portion of the population. Several reasons are contributing to this rise:
1. Lifestyle Factors: Modern lifestyles characterized by stress, poor dietary choices, lack of exercise, and environmental toxins can disrupt thyroid function.
2. Increased Awareness and Diagnosis: Improved awareness and diagnostic techniques have led to more people being diagnosed with thyroid disorders.
3. Genetic Predisposition: Genetic factors can also play a role in developing thyroid disorders.
4. Environmental Factors: Exposure to pollutants, radiation, and certain chemicals can affect thyroid health.
5. Dietary Factors: Nutrient deficiencies, particularly iodine and selenium, can impact thyroid function.
Given the complex nature of thyroid disorders and the limitations of conventional medicine in providing long-term solutions, many people are turning to Ayurveda for management. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach that focuses on balancing the body’s energies, improving overall health, and addressing the root cause of the disorder. Ayurvedic plans often include dietary changes, herbal remedies, lifestyle modifications, and stress management techniques.
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck that produces hormones responsible for regulating metabolism, growth, and energy levels. Thyroid disorders occur when the thyroid gland produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or too little hormone (hypothyroidism). These imbalances can result from various factors, including autoimmune conditions (such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease), nodules on the thyroid gland, inflammation, or iodine deficiency.
What is Metabolism?
Metabolism is a complex series of processes in which the human body transforms food, water, and oxygen into tissue, energy, and waste products. It occurs in every cell of the body and involves breaking down substances into simpler parts and recombining them to create new substances that make up the body. An example of this is the breakdown of carbohydrates into glucose by enzymes and acids. Anabolism is the process in which food materials are converted for use by the body, while catabolism is the process of producing energy by breaking down tissues into waste products. Together, these processes make up metabolism. The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the rate at which the body consumes energy while at complete rest. It can be measured by analyzing the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide during breathing under specific conditions. BMR is an indicator of a person’s overall health. What are Endocrine glands? Endocrine glands play a crucial role in controlling metabolism by secreting substances into the blood or lymph. The main endocrine glands include the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pituitary body, parathyroid glands, pancreas, ovaries, and testes. The thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck, produces the hormone thyroxine, which regulates the body’s metabolism. Defects in its function can lead to conditions like myxoedema in adults and cretinism in children. Excessive secretion of thyroxine is associated with conditions like exophthalmic goitre, thyrotoxicosis, and Grave’s disease. |
Types of thyroid disorders:
1. Hypothyroidism:
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormone, which is more common than hyperthyroidism. This can be caused by factors such as iodine deficiency, thyroid failure due to issues with the pituitary gland, inflammation, or scarring. Many cases of hypothyroidism are mild and often go unnoticed by medical professionals, but can still result in symptoms such as fatigue, depression, and hormonal imbalances. In more severe cases, hypothyroidism can lead to developmental issues like cretinism or juvenile myxedema. Long-term hypothyroidism can also cause symptoms such as skin swelling, dry and cold skin, a puffy face, and other health problems like angina pain, bradycardia, anorexia, constipation, and anaemia.
2. Hyperthyroidism:
Excessive hormone secretion by the gland is a condition that is more prevalent in women aged between 30 and 50 than in men. Individuals with this condition, known as thyrotoxicosis, exhibit symptoms such as tremors, irritability, anxiety, and sometimes hysteria. Due to increased metabolism, they may experience a fast heart rate, palpitations, rapid shallow breathing, frequent bowel movements, diarrhoea, flushing, heat intolerance, sweating, menstrual irregularities, and occasionally protruding eyes. Despite feeling fatigued and lacking energy, they feel compelled to be active, talk, and engage in activities, leading to constant fidgeting and potentially inappropriate outbursts of anger triggered by minor comments.
3. Thyroid Nodules:
These abnormal growths or lumps on the thyroid gland can be benign or malignant.
4. Thyroiditis:
Inflammation of the thyroid gland, which can be caused by infections, autoimmune conditions, or other factors.
5. Thyroid Cancer:
Although less common, thyroid cancer can develop in the cells of the thyroid gland.
People with thyroid disorders need to work closely with healthcare providers, whether opting for conventional treatments or exploring Ayurvedic approaches, to effectively manage their condition and improve their overall well-being.
What Causes Thyroid Disorders According to Ayurveda?
In Ayurveda, the thyroid gland is associated with the Vishuddha chakra, which governs communication and self-expression. When this chakra is imbalanced, it can manifest as thyroid issues. Ayurvedic treatment for hypothyroidism focuses on restoring balance to the Vishuddha chakra and supporting the overall health of the thyroid gland.
Ayurveda attributes thyroid problems to imbalances in the doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Here are 4 causes of thyroid disorders According to Ayurveda:
1. Imbalance in Vata Dosha:
An imbalance in the Vata dosha can lead to hypothyroidism, resulting in symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and depression. Ayurvedic treatments for balancing Vata dosha include lifestyle changes, dietary modifications, and specific herbs and supplements.
