Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It can lead to various complications, one of which is diabetic retinopathy. According to Ayurveda, diabetes retinopathy occurs due to an imbalance in the doshas, leading to damage to the blood vessels in the eyes.
In this blog post, we will delve into the causes and risk factors of diabetes retinopathy, its ayurvedic treatment, and home remedies to manage the condition.
What is Diabetes Retinopathy?
Diabetes retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. It occurs when high levels of glucose in the blood cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye. Over time, this damage can lead to vision loss and blindness.
Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy:
You might not have symptoms in the initial stages of diabetic retinopathy. As the condition advances, you might develop the following:
- Floaters (Spots or dark strings floating in your vision)
- Blurry visions
- Fluctuating vision
- Dark or empty areas in your vision
- Vision loss
Types of Diabetic Retinopathy:
Early diabetic retinopathy:
Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), the more prevalent variety, is marked by the absence of new blood vessel growth (increasing).
The retinal blood vessel walls deteriorate when you have NPDR. Small protrusions from the smaller arteries’ walls occasionally leak fluid and blood into the retina. The diameter of larger retinal vessels can also start to enlarge and change. NPDR can worsen when more blood vessels are blocked, from mild to severe.
There may occasionally be an accumulation of fluid (edema) in the retina’s macular region as a result of retinal blood vessel injury. Treatment is needed to prevent irreversible vision loss if macular edema impairs vision.
Advanced diabetic retinopathy:
Advanced diabetic retinopathy is a more serious form of diabetic retinopathy that can develop. This type results in new, aberrant blood vessels in the retina as injured blood vessels close off. The transparent, jelly-like fluid that fills the center of your eye can leak from these new blood vessels because they are weak (vitreous).
The retina may eventually separate from the back of your eye due to scar tissue produced by developing new blood vessels. The eyeball may become pressurized if the new blood vessels obstruct the normal drainage of fluid from the eye. Glaucoma can develop due to this buildup harming the optic nerve, which delivers images from your eye to your brain.
Why Does Diabetes Retinopathy Happen According to Ayurveda?
According to Ayurveda, diabetes retinopathy occurs due to an imbalance in the doshas, particularly the Pitta and Kapha doshas. When these doshas are imbalanced, they can lead to a buildup of toxins in the body, which can cause damage to the blood vessels in the eyes.
What Causes Or Risk Factors of Developing Diabetes Retinopathy
The primary cause of diabetic retinopathy is high blood glucose levels. However, several risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing the condition, including:
- Poorly managed diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol levels
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Family history of diabetes retinopathy
