Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose is too high. Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems.
Ayurveda treats every illness and condition holistically. Diabetes is no exception. Diabetes is a chronic metabolic condition where the body cannot digest glucose properly, leading to hyperglycemia (hyperglycemia) and sugar in the urine.
In this article will discuss diabetes care using Ayurveda.
Diabetes According To Ayurveda —
Ayurveda calls diabetes “Madhumeha” /”prameha”. Ayurveda’s Diabetes means “sweet urine” because “Madhu” means sweet, and “Meha” means urine.
Named after the fact that diabetic urine smells like honey, Ayurveda describes each person as a unique combination of Doshas. Three Doshas are Vata (Pitta) and Kapha (Kapha).
Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are dry, airy doshas, while Kapha is cold, heavy, and slimy Kapha. These Tridoshas gets imbalanced, predominantly Bhej and Vata with the Aam. This affects the digestion and reduces the metabolism. These vitiated Doshas affect functioning of the liver and pancreas. The insulin produced by pancreas is reduced or obstructed with the Aam and Kapha; because of this the sugar levels in the body increases. With time the vitiated Vata carries the other vitiated Doshas in the urinary bladder causing increased micturition. This presents in the form of fatigue, tiredness, excessive sweating, frequent urination, excessive hunger and slow weight loss.
Health issues related to imbalanced Doshas can result from imbalances in each Dosha. Diabetes can be caused by Kapha Dosha imbalance. However, being Kapha dominant does not necessarily mean you have Diabetes.
Diabetes can result from Kapha dominance if it isn’t balanced with a healthy lifestyle.

Types of Diabetes
Madhuprameh (diabetes) is a condition where there is high level of sugar in the blood and urine.
There are two types Type 1 & Type 2.
Type 1 Insuline dependent or juvenile diabetes (It often begins in childhood)
In this type, 90% of the insulin producing cells of the pancreas are permanently destroyed and therefore, produces little or no insulin. Most people have develope this before the age of 30 and it is non reversible.
Type 2 – Non insulin dependent
Type 2 is usually begins in people older than 30 and becomes progressively more common with age.Obesity is the main factor developing type 2 diabetes. In this case, the Pancreas continues to produce insulin, some times even at higher-than-normal levels. But the body develops resistance to the effects of insulin, 80 to 90% of people with this condition are obese. It is the most common form accounting for 95% of diabetes cases in adults.
Normally our muscles and fatty tissues stores sugar in the cells. With the help of insulin, they absorb this sugar from the blood. Whenever our body exercise or uses energy, the sugar from muscles and fatty tissues is burned. Lack of exercise, over eating and eating wrong food depletes Agni (Metabolic fire), slows down metabolism. Thus, the sugar from the muscles and fatty tissues is not burned and they become saturated with the sugar. So they stop taking sugar from the blood thus there is resistance in absorbing sugar from the blood and the blood sugar remains high. This metabolic slow down produces heavy sticky mucus which is known as plaque in modern terms. Ayurveda call it as “Aama”.
Diabetes can push you to other health complications if not managed —
Why do you need to eradicate the root cause of diabetes rather than just controlling the blood sugar with medicines?
If the metabolism is not rectified by diet and lifestyle, then plaque/Aama can cause the following problems even if medications control the blood sugar.
Heart disease CNS disorders (Nerve Problem)Poor kidney functions (Kidney Problem) Decreased vision and ultimately blindness (Diabetic Retinopathy)Swings in blood pressure Deep infections. Poor healing.
A planned diet with herbal medications can aid deeper healing at all levels and help maintain all bodily functions in order.
Ayurveda Vs Modern Medicines
Diabetes is a metabolic condition. It cannot be treated just by lowering Blood Sugar Levels. In contrast to Modern medicine, Ayurveda approaches diabetes mellitus in a unique way. It literally revitalizes the body, not only to control blood sugar levels but also working on the root cause and prevent further complications.
The medications such as Sulfonylureas, Meglitinides, and Thiazolidinediones works to stimulate the pancreas to secrete more insulin. They also have a risk of causing low blood sugar, weight gain and other more-serious side effects, such as an increased risk of heart failure and anaemia.
Manage Diabetes With Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda, there are 20 types of diabetes (prameha). There are 4 due to Vata and 6 due to Pitta. 10 due to Kapha. Diabetes (Prameha), however, is mainly Kapha doshaja. You can get help with diabetes through Ayurveda in four different ways
