Back pain can make life really hard. It can stop you from doing your job, exercising, or even simple things like walking or sitting. Sometimes, back pain goes away quickly, but other times it sticks around for a long time because of an injury or illness.
Prolonged time sitting during study or sports-related injuries can result in children experiencing back pain. Similarly, adults and the elderly may also complain of back aches due to a busy, stressful lifestyle. Also, serious conditions such as sciatica can lead to back pain. It’s worth noting that the majority of low back pain in India is quite concerning, with nearly 60% of the population having experienced it at some point in their lives.
Back pain comes in different forms. Some people have constant pain in their lower back, while others have spasms. Some even feel pain that goes from their back down to their legs and arms.
These kinds of ongoing back problems can disrupt your life. It’s more common than you might think. 8 out of 10 people have dealt with back pain at some point.
Every year, more than two million people go to the emergency room because of lower back pain. It’s also a major cause of disability worldwide. Unfortunately, the usual treatments for back pain aren’t as effective as they should be.
Many people with back pain end up getting lots of tests, being told to stay still, and taking strong painkillers. While these painkillers might help for a short time, they can cause more health issues and even addiction. Also, staying still for too long can make your muscles stiff and more prone to future injuries.
The good news is that there are many other ways to manage back pain, and most of them are easy to access. Ayushakti Ayurved provides an Ayurvedic approach that can help you find relief from back pain in a natural way.

What are the Causes of Back Pain?
Back pain can arise without a specific trigger, and it is associated with various conditions, including:
-
Muscle or ligament strain:
This can occur as a result of repeated heavy lifting or sudden awkward movements, leading to strain in the back muscles and spinal ligaments.
-
Bulging or ruptured disks:
The disks, which act as cushions between the vertebrae in the spine, may experience a bulge or rupture, causing the soft material inside to press on a nerve.
-
Spinal degeneration:
Wear and tear on the discs can lead to a narrowing of the spinal canal, resulting in stiffness or pain after prolonged walking or standing.
-
Arthritis:
Osteoarthritis can affect the lower back and, in some cases, lead to a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord, known as spinal stenosis.
-
Skeletal irregularities:
Back pain may occur if the spine curves abnormally, such as in the case of scoliosis, where the spine curves to the side.
-
osteoporosis:
When bones become porous and brittle, compression fractures of the spine’s vertebrae can occur.
-
Fibromyalgia:
This chronic disorder is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tender points, particularly in the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips.
-
Spondylitis:
Chronic back pain and stiffness can result from severe infection or inflammation of the spinal joints.

The Ayurvedic Perspective – Back Pain
According to Ayurveda, health issues arise due to imbalances in the doshas. Back pain is associated with a disruption in the vata dosha, leading to weakness in bones and muscles. Ayurvedic treatment for back pain focuses on realigning the vata to restore the balance and promote overall healing.
In Ayurveda, back pain, known as Kateegraham, is believed to be caused by digestive issues and an imbalance in the Vata dosha. A malfunctioning digestive system leads to the accumulation of toxins (ama), which, when combined with Vata, build up in the body’s channels, ultimately resulting in back pain.
Ayurvedic treatment for back pain not only aims to address the root cause of the issue but also focuses on maintaining overall health and well-being. This treatment approach works to strengthen the muscles, allowing back pain sufferers to lead a revitalized life following Ayurvedic therapies and treatments.

Ayurvedic Therapies for Back Pain
These ayurvedic treatments may reverse or reduce the conditions that causes back pain:
Abhyanga:
This involves a warm oil massage over the entire body, with a focus on the lower back area. It revitalises the body’s cells. Once the client learns the technique, self-abhyanga can be beneficial.
Basti:
This method expels body doshas. Special herbal medicines are administered into the body through the anus or vaginal canal to eliminate toxins.
Kati Basti:
A lukewarm herbal medicated oil is applied over the lumbosacral area for some time.
Sneha Basti:
This type of body detoxification therapy involves an enema of medicated oils, clearing the body’s vital systems of accumulated toxins.
Kashaya Basti:
It is an enema of medicated decoction.
Alternating Hot and Cold Therapy:
In cases of injury-related back pain, ice is typically most effective when applied soon after the injury. Ice can also alleviate postoperative pain. Heat therapy provides pain relief and healing benefits for many types of lower back pain. Heating pads, heat wraps, hot baths, and warm gel packs are inexpensive and easy to use. Some patients find more pain relief with one therapy over the other, but alternating between both can also be effective.
Marma Therapy:
This therapy focuses on the body’s junction points, where subtle life force energy becomes matter, and where thoughts convert into physical matter. Mental stresses can obstruct the subtle body channels, reducing energy flow. A gentle touch on the Marma points releases emotional blocks, allowing life force energy to flow to connecting organs or tissues. This renewed energy flow energizes the organs.
Agnikarma:
Agnikarma involves the use of thermal microclusters, using an instrument called Agnikarma Shalaka to heat specific areas and provide relief from pain. This Ayurvedic treatment can be highly effective in alleviating lower back pain and offering quick relief.
Eating Habits and Dietary Practices:
Improper diet and lifestyle can lead to the development of back pain in many individuals. Making a few adjustments to your eating habits and dietary practices can help prevent back pain.
- Eat meals at regular intervals and at set times.
- Consume warm and adequate portions of food.
- Avoid oily and spicy foods.
- Steer clear of junk food, carbonated beverages, and ice cream.
- Refrain from eating very late at night.
- Maintain a minimum one-hour gap between dinner and bedtime.
