- Milk & Dairy Products
Milk and milk products such as yogurt, paneer, cheese, ice creams, etc., are the main culprit producing Aama (mucous) toxins in your body and creating inflammation and blocks in the respiratory walls, which can flare up Asthma. Hence, permanently avoid them. You can replace milk with almond milk, rice milk, soya milk, or oat milk.
- Wheat and Refined Flour
Gluten contained in wheat and refined flour foods creates inflammation, which blocks airways, creating respiration difficult.
- Red Meat
Red Meat is hefty to digest. Your digestion capacity is already poor and slow in Asthma and bronchitis conditions. When you eat red meat, the digestion power even gets worse, and it takes 3-4 times more hours to digest the heavy food items. Undigested food again creates inflammation and blockages in the respiratory, causing chronic cough and breathing difficulty. Hence avoid them.
- Also, avoid taking deeply fried, fermented, sour, spicy, and heavy foods. Sweets, chilled drinks, walnuts and peanuts, canned and preservative-rich foods. Vinegar, alcohol.
- Raw salads and sprouts as they are gas-forming.
- Avoid all sour fruits.
- Avoid bananas while you have a cough, cold and allergic symptoms. They aggravate Kapha (phlegm) formation in the lungs and lead to Asthma and Bronchitis.So avoid them.
Best foods to control and prevent Asthma and Bronchitis for the long term:
Eat hot, soupy, sloppy meals that are easy to digest, and not producing mucus.
- Cooked vegetables such as pumpkin (kaddu ), squashes, marrow, Ivy Gourd (Tendli ), spinach (Palak), fenugreek leaves (Methi), French beans (Phansi), bottle gourds (Dudhi), ridge gourds (Turai), snake gourd (Padwal), smooth gourd (Galka), mange-tout, asparagus, fennel swedes, sweet corn, onions, carrots, parsnips, beetroot, celery, chicory, and leeks.
- Pulses are an essential part of a healthy diet. Mung and split Mung beans (green gram), lentils (Tuvar Dal, Masoor dal) are easy to digest, balancing, and nourishing to the body. To get the full value from pulses they should be eaten along with grains (especially rice).
- Grains such as rice, oat, rye, maize (makai), millets (jawar, bajra, nachani), amaranth (rajigira), quinoa, Kamut, spelt, polenta. Buckwheat flour. You can make chapatis from multigrain such as millets, buckwheat, and rice flours.
- Spices are best to balance doshas: Cumin, coriander, black pepper, cinnamon, fennel, saffron.
- Hot Black Tea or Ginger Tea greatly helps to melt the sticky mucus and expel them out.
Occasionally you can have:
- Dried fruits like almonds, apricots, figs, hazelnuts, dates, and raisins.
- Potatoes should only be eaten occasionally, with their skin.
- Eggs, white meat like chicken, turkey, and fish (freshwater).
LIFESTYLE:-
DO’S
- Deep breathing exercises
- Do light exercise, under guidance only.
- Do yoga and meditation.
- Drink lukewarm water with occasional hot salt water gargles
- Fasting once a week with warm ginger water.
DON’TS
- Avoid roaming in cloudy climates.
- Avoid polluted atmosphere, dust, smoke, use masks for that.
- Avoid cold water
- Avoid the use of air conditioners.
- Avoid taking a bath with cold water; take a warm water bath.
